A new home for an iconic brand: WD-40's Macquarie Park workplace

When WD-40 Company Australia set out to create a new head office at Macquarie Park, we designed and built a workplace that tells anyone who visits who they are from the moment you walk in the door. 

Step through the entrance and two large mesh screens immediately set the tone. One carries the brand's iconic logo. The other is fitted with an arrangement of rusty parts and tools; the kind of hardware WD-40 products are designed to be used with. 

Moving through the space, the layout opens into a large collaborative workspace, with offices and meeting rooms positioned around the perimeter. This arrangement was a deliberate design choice, allowing natural light to flood deep into the floor plate and keep the whole office feeling bright and connected. 

In the breakout area, company values are displayed on a feature wall with recycled brick tiles which has been layered with a jagged, torn-edge plasterboard, imitating the look of an exposed brick wall where render has been chipped away to reveal the texture underneath. It's rustic, industrial and full of character, and it perfectly complements the brand's practical, hands-on identity. 

To keep the space comfortable, the ceiling above the breakout area was sprayed with an acoustic spray finish, reducing reverberation and noise spillage from the social space into the surrounding workspace. Suspended lighting throughout the breakout area and reception adds another layer of depth, drawing the eye to these feature zones and giving the entire office a warm and inviting atmosphere.  

This workplace reflects a brand that is practical, authentic and proud of its heritage. Thoughtful material choices, careful acoustic and lighting design, and a genuine collaborative process between client, consultants and contractors have delivered a workplace custom-built for WD-40.
