We supported A&O Shearman in their significant move to one of Sydney’s most beloved landmarks, its first skyscraper, 33 Alfred Street. The global firm’s new workplace carefully balances heritage sensitivity with the performance demands of a contemporary legal environment.

A modern legal workplace in a historic, reimagined Sydney landmark.

Overlooking the harbour and predating the Sydney Opera House, the 26-storey 33 Alfred St has been revitalised to meet contemporary sustainability benchmarks, achieving a 6 Star Green Star – Office As Built v3 rating and a 5.5-star NABERS Energy rating.

Appointed by Generate Property Group, we worked within the constraints of this heritage-listed structure to deliver a highly considered fitout. Complex site conditions, including strict heritage requirements and the management of existing asbestos, were navigated with precision to ensure the design intent was realised without compromising safety or compliance. The delivery also aligned with the building’s broader sustainability ambitions, reinforcing a workplace that is both future-focused and respectful of its past.

Designed by Hassell, the space reflects the firm’s standing as a market leader in legal services, while aligning with unified global workplace standards across its international presence. The space incorporates a high proportion of enclosed offices, responding to the operational needs of a legal practice, while maintaining a sense of openness, flow and connectivity through careful spatial planning and an interconnecting stair.

A refined material palette defines the workplace experience. Curved office frontages and extensive timber detailing anchor the design, particularly within the front-of-house areas, creating warmth and a strong connection to the building’s history. Heritage elements are preserved throughout, while curated mid-century furniture selections subtly reference the precinct's architectural heritage.

A bespoke framing system, delivered via a Unistrut solution, enabled a non-traditional construction approach, supporting walls and ceilings without direct ceiling fixing and allowing for varied acoustic treatments. Complex coordination was also required to integrate services within existing building conditions, alongside resolving detailed design challenges such as the operable AV wall system, where our team worked closely with consultants to refine and deliver a buildable solution.

The result is a workplace that reflects A&O Shearman’s global brand - premium, precise and responsive to both its heritage context and the needs of an international firm.
