Maddocks’ new workplace at the 33 Alfred Street, Sydney’s first skyscraper, marks a confident step forward for the firm, showcasing progressive design and sustainability in a heritage environment.

Maddocks - 33 Alfred Street

We were proud to deliver a new home for Maddocks, guided by the design vision of Bates Smart and bringing together the ambition to build a collaborative and future-focused workplace.

Capitalising on sweeping views across Sydney Harbour, the workplace is organised with open-plan seating positioned along the perimeter, while Partner offices are thoughtfully integrated throughout. The working floors have been designed to support the rhythms of a contemporary legal practice, balancing focused work with connection. A mix of focus rooms, huddle spaces, generous breakout areas and tea points encourages collaboration, movement and informal interaction throughout the day.

The client floor delivers a refined hospitality-led experience, featuring timber parquetry flooring, warm timber wall panelling, polished aluminium partitioning and a natural stone café and barista bar. A commercial kitchen, private dining rooms, flexible meeting spaces and entertainment areas create a setting that supports both client engagement and firm-wide events.

Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project. With a focus on locally sourced Australian materials, we provided early guidance on local suppliers that aligned with Maddocks’ community focus while reducing program and supply-chain risk.

As our second fitout within the building, our established relationship with Dexus played an important role in navigating the complexities of the site. Delivering within a heritage-listed building presented unique challenges, including HAZMAT management with the potential presence of asbestos, coordination with neighbouring tenants, and careful logistics planning due to lift and delivery constraints. We maintained effective stakeholder management, regardless of a Melbourne-based client and design team, ensuring there was regular and transparent communication throughout the build and as the team moved into their new space.

The completed workplace reflects Maddocks’ position as a modern Australian law firm while supporting community-focused initiatives. During the build, we co-hosted a “Breakfast for Good” with Two Good Co, supporting their mission to empower and employ vulnerable women impacted by women with lived experience of homelessness, domestic violence and complex trauma.

We’re proud to see this project contribute to the broader Precinct Experience at 33 Alfred Street, joining other leading organisations in the epicentre of Sydney’s CBD.
